Glory from ruin. Once a thriving Jewish community, Uzupis was decimated by the Holocaust. Its 148 acres and vacant buildings became the haunt of prostitutes and the homeless. In recent years life has returned with the influence of art—about 1000 of the 7000 residents are artists.
